What led you to apply to APHD at OISE?
In 2022, I was finishing an ECE diploma as my goal was to open up a music school, but a volunteer experience in a TDSB school changed my mind and I decided to pursue teaching. This decision was fortuitous as I soon discovered the application for the MA CSE program would be due in 4 days! I scrambled to get my references and application together but thankfully it all worked out. It was the only teaching program I ended up applying to and I am so grateful to be here after that whirlwind period.

What was your past experience like?
I've had an eclectic career to date, working as a Government scientist at Cancer Care Ontario, and working with humanitarian organizations and community groups, some of which involved volunteering and working with youth. I've always been dedicated to public service, whether that's been within the scientific discipline, health care, or education. I love working in teams, and I'm a strong believer in collaborative learning. In an ideal world, I think that classrooms should have two teachers! Many of my colleagues would agree.

Are there any past accomplishments that you would like to highlight?
Recently I've worked with Dr. Laurie Faith, at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study, on a study looking to understand teacher's use of emotional validation in the classroom. Our work was accepted to the American Educational Research Association's (AERA) annual conference, and with Grad funding (still pending!) I am looking forward attending, presenting, and learning from experts in education and its allied fields.

What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at OISE?
I have loved being a part of the JICS community, which began even before my enrolment as a substitute ECE and summer camp supervisor. I have gotten to know and worked with incredible people, from the admin to the faculty and daycare staff, and not to forget the amazing kids and families who form the fabric of the school. From day one, I was welcomed and immediately felt at home in the school. This also extended into academia as my science and research background was valued in and outside of the classroom. I have also made lifelong friends in my program, and we have been each other's supports as we've navigated this path together. JICS is like family and it's a very special place right at the heart of OISE.

What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
As a lifelong Torontonian, my favourite thing about the city is how it's very much a city of neighbourhoods and regions. No part of the city is like another, and every area has its own flavour and culture. It takes a while to learn the ins and outs of your own neighbourhood but then add in the countless experiences of exploring other parts of the city, and there is actually a lifetime of things to do and learn in this city.

What does your 鈥渨eekend鈥 typically look like?
I'd say a typical weekend involves a good balance of work, leisure, and quality time with family and friends. I'll enjoy a bike ride or walk in my neighbourhood, grab a coffee, do some schoolwork, and then meet up with friends and family in the afternoon and evenings for a drink or see a show.

What are some of your hobbies & interests?
I'm a musician so I love to write and play my own music. I haven't really performed enough these days, but I've always got things in the works! I also love to stay active, and I run and bike in warmer weather. I also play volleyball at school and squash with friends. I also love to travel, and my favourite thing is going somewhere (local or foreign) as long as I have a car to explore the landscape, go hiking, and discover new cuisines and cultures.

What is your favourite type of cuisine?
Probably Italian food, followed by BBQ fare and meat on the grill.

Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
Ideally in a classroom, which I see in the medium term, but immediately after as a supply teacher, and learning where I think my talents and values will be a good fit with a school.
