Tara Goldstein and Yasmin Owis address ethical principles and practices for arts-based testimonial research
On October 22nd, Professor Tara Goldstein and Ph.D. candidate Yasmin Owis kicked off the 2020-21 ‘Focus on Research’ lecture series with an online talk on LGBTQ Families Speak Out, an ambitious study conveying the experiences of LGBTQ families in Ontario public schools over a period of six years.
Nearly fifty OISE community members tuned in for a behind-the-scenes view of the arts-based testimonial research methods informing the project. Highlights included a tour of the project website, which serves as an archive representing the voices of families in the LGBTQ community. Audience members connected with Goldstein’s and Owis’s discussion of the ethical principles informing every aspect of their project, from their work with families in the LGBTQ community, to their curation of materials on their website and the verbatim theatre production emerging from their research. At every step, their work is informed by the aim of creating a community of care.
Michele Peterson-Badali, Associate Dean, Research, International and Innovation, thanked the presenters for their “rich, thoughtful, and nourishing presentation.” She invited OISE community members to join future online Focus on Research events in 2020-21, which showcase OISE researchers’ innovative research methods and provide an opportunity to gather around shared interests.
