This contribution will total more than $11.5M. Over 160,000 children between the ages of 0 and 5 live in these communities. The networks include municipalities, child care services, health and social service centres, schools and community organizations and total over 1,000 partner agencies. Significantly, 25 of these networks are being funded for the first time. A further 44 are in contact with Avenir dEnfants and are likely to request funding during the coming year. Lyse Brunet, General Manager of Avenir d'enfants, explains: A year and a half after the creation of Avenir denfants, we applaud the enthusiasm of our local partners for implementing early childhood activities and initiatives. These activities may, for example, focus on language stimulation, transition from child care centres to schooling, support and networking for parents etc. Over six months, weve seen a 60% increase in the number of communities involved -- proof that early childhood education is a priority for local stakeholders. Supporting Knowledge Sharing Avenir denfants will provide financial support for 13 knowledge-sharing projects, five of which are new. The total investments being made is nearly $12.5M. All of these projects aim to better equip service providers with the tools needed to ensure that their initiatives, particularly those dealing with children living in poverty, contribute to successful school entry. The following is a brief description of these new projects. Acquisition and knowledge sharing in community-based social pediatrics Backed by the Fondation du Dr Julien, this project aims to develop a training continuum for community-based social pediatrics which would allow for the sharing of knowledge, skills and attitudes about child development as applied in Dr. Juliens centres over the past 20 years. The project includes university training, continuing education for professionals and awareness-raising for communities, parents and partners. The funding for this project is $1.5M over three years. The AIDES Initiative (Intersectorial Action for Child Development and Protection) To be carried out by a team of university researchers led by Claire Chamberland, this project aims to adapt a framework developed in the UK for the Quebec context. This framework focuses on improving both the services available to children and the area of child protection. It is a concrete approach based on the analysis of childrens needs and the active participation of their parents. This project will receive funding of $448,705 over one year. La Maison Bleue, a model of perinatal services that works! La Maison Bleue will carry out an in-depth study of its integrated model of perinatal services. The project will include an assessment of the programs impact on its target population. It will also examine knowledge sharing to health institutions, social services and organizations working with clients living in vulnerable circumstances during the perinatal period and the first few years of a childs life. The funding for this project is $358,000 over five years. Increasing the knowledge of service providers Backed by the department of public health of the Montreal Agency for Health and Social Services, this project aims to better support local and regional agencies in their efforts to improve early childhood development and school readiness. This is to be achieved by increasing their knowledge of the preschool experiences of Montreal children and the realities faced by their parents, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This project is to receive $197,000 over two years. A guide to health and development This project of the Quebec Institute of Public Health (INSP) involves carrying out a feasibility study and a plan for adapting and disseminating the Guide entitled Mieux vivre avec notre enfant de 2 5 ans (A Practical Guide for Caring for Your Child between the Ages of 2 and 5). One of the aims of this project is to identify specific means of reaching parents living in situations of poverty. This project will receive funding of $53,400 over a year. The list of communities and a brief description of supported projects is available at www.avenirdenfants.org About Avenir denfants Avenir denfants is a non-profit organization (NPO) which was created as a joint initiative of the Quebec Government and the Lucie and Andr Chagnon Foundation.
